The Rower ( _ga. An Robhar) is a small village in County Kilkenny, Leinster in the south east Ireland. The Rower is on the R705 regional road, roughly 30 km from both Waterford and the city of Kilkenny.

It is renowned for its hurling team, The Rower-Inistioge, and its beautiful scenery. It lies between the rivers Barrow and Nore on the slopes of Brandon Hill and Cullintra Hill.

There are two churches, The Rower Church and Clodiagh in The Rower and a school in Marymount National School.

The ruined castle of Coolkill, said to have belonged to the Butler family, still exists; and there are several broken cromlechs in the vicinity of Ballynabarna.

Brandon Hill, the highest point in Kilkenny, overlooks The Rower.

Gardens

Dahlia Garden is a half acre collection of 300 varieties of dahlias which is open from july to september. There is a large selection of chrysantheumus and herbaceous plants.

Geography

The Rower is in the county of Kilkenny, and province of Leinster about 4 miles south east from Inistioge.

The parish, which is also called Rochar, was situated at the confluence of the rivers Nore and Barrow, forming a tongue of land extending five miles in length from north to south, by about three in breadth.

History

Rower, or Roar, was a parish, in the barony of IDA, within its limits was Ringwood, the seat of Lord Clifden; and an ancient residence of the Bolger family. The parish comprised of 10,508 statute acres, as applotted under the tithe act, of which about 1000 acres consist of mountain, and a small portion of bog.

The story goes that when Cromwell was going through Ireland robbing churches, he didn't see Clodiagh, as it was down and was covered in bushes and shrubs.
