Mulder goes in search of a ship that disappeared in the
Bermuda Triangle in 1939. But when he gets on board, Mulder finds that he—and all the passengers and crew (as well as some strangely familiar ones)—are still stuck in the past.Notes
* Gillian Anderson, William B. Davis, Chris Owens, James Pickens Jr and Mitch Pileggi play characters in 1939 as well as their regular ones.
* The episode was designed by Chris Carter to be similar in style toAlfred Hitchcock ’s "Rope". Through manipulation of the camera, and editing, the episode is designed to look like it was shot in four uninterrupted eleven-minute takes. Each time the camera passes through a curtain, a cut is made.
* The episode references "The Wizard of Oz" in many ways:
** At the end, Mulder says he was on the "Queen Anne", and says to his visitors that they were there.
** The ship's captain is named Yip Harburg. E.Y. (Yip) Harburg was the lyricist for "The Wizard of Oz".
** The name of the ballroom singer is Almira Gulch, after the Wizard of Oz character who is also theWicked Witch of the West and theWicked Witch of the East
** Mulder's wrecked ship is called the "Lady Garland", afterJudy Garland .
** The episode takes place in 1939, the year "The Wizard of Oz" is released.
* When Mulder knocks Spender unconscious on the "Queen Anne", he takes his uniform and position. In reality, it is the other way around: Spender has taken Mulder's position in the FBI.
* Gillian Anderson’s 1939 character is said to work for the OSS - which wasn’t established until 1942.
* The Bureau of Investigation was formed in 1908 and renamed to theFederal Bureau of Investigation in 1935, but none of the 1939 British crew members had heard of it.
* The opening credits text reads “Die Wahrheit ist irgendwo da draußen”, which translates to "The Truth Is Somewhere Out There".
* This episode contains the first of five kisses Duchovny and Anderson will share on-screen. The second one is in the seventh season episode "Millennium", the third in the season eight finale "Existence", the fourth one in the series finale "The Truth", and the fifth and final one in the 2008 movie "". Technically, however, it is not the first kiss between Mulder and Scully, since Anderson is representing the OSS agent in 1939.External links
