- John Imray
Dr. John Imray (
January 11 ,1811 –August 22 ,1880 ) was amedical doctor , legislator, agriculturist andbotanist . Born in Scotland he studied medicine atEdinburgh University and arrived inDominica in 1832 to take up the only public medical post at the time: surgeon to the prison.Imray published papers on
tropical diseases and botany, corresponded withWilliam Hooker and sent plants toJohn Lindley at the herbarium atKew and toAugust Grisebach atGoettingen .He was instrumental in agricultural policy, development and sanitation on Dominica .
After him are named many plants as well as the Imray ward at the
Princess Margaret Hospital inRousseau ,Dominica .External links
