footnotes =Caia is a town on the south bank of the
Zambezi River inSofala Province ,Mozambique . It is the site of one of the largest ferries across the river, a vital link on the main north-south highway which runs the length of the country near the coast. The ferry is often unreliable and may not operate when the river experiences its annual flood.Overview
In 2007 construction was due to start on the longest road bridge to span the Zambezi. With a length of 2376 m and width of 16 m it will be longer than the bridges at
Tete andKatima Mulilo , exceeded only by theDona Ana Bridge , being restored as a railway bridge. The Caia Bridge will cost US$80 million. Google Earth has high resolution photos of Caia, showing the ferry, land cleared for the bridge approaches, and derelict railway rolling stock.]Caia also has an airport with a 900-metre paved runway, and is a station on the railway from
Beira via the Dona Ana Bridge toMalawi ,Moatize andTete , which was the damaged in the war and is planned for rehabilitation.References
