James Grimsley, Jr.

James Alex Grimsley, Jr., former Major General of the United States Army, was named interim President of the Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina in August 1980. He was then selected as the 16th President by unanimous vote of the Board of Visitors in December of that year.

Biography

Gen Grimsley was born and raised in Florence, South Carolina. After graduating with the Citadel Class of 1942, Grimsley was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the US Army and immediately went to Europe to fight in World War II. His last active duty assignment was as a division director in the Office of the Secretary of Defense. Gen Grimsley came to the Citadel in 1975 as Vice President of the Citadel. Upon retiring in 1989, Gen Grimsley was named President Emeritus. This distinction had previously only been given to Gen Charles Summerall and Gen Mark Clark.

Awards

At the time of Gen Grimsley's retirement he had received 35 major decorations to include two Silver Stars, four Bronze Stars, four Legion of Merit awards and three Purple Hearts.
