Washington Christian Academy (often abbreviated as WCA) is a small private non-denominational Christian school temporarily located in Silver Spring, Maryland. Coming next year, the school will relocate to a permanent campus in Olney, Maryland that is currently being constructed. The school is known for its small, tightly-knit community that has been developing over the past 40-plus years of its existence.

Washington Christian Academy is currently a member of Christian Schools International

History

Formation

Washington Christian Academy was formed when local families from Presbyterian and Christian Reformed churches in the area felt the need for a strong, biblically based and diverse school in the Washington, DC area. For the time, the school defied cultural values and created a school that specifically named diversity as one of its top qualities. ["WCA Transcends Racial Boundaries: Why WCA [http://washingtonchristian.org/page02a2.shtml] ] The school was formed as Washington Christian School in 1960 for grades K-4. WCS stayed small until 1996 when it merged with the nearby Silver Spring Christian Academy (a school for grades 9-12), forming Washington Christian Academy (Pre K-12). They continued to grow and were housed at that time in a public school building on Franwall Avenue in Burtonsville, Maryland.

Building Changes

Washington Christian Academy has recently moved into a new building in Olney, MD which will better accommodate the growing student population.

New Building

Since April 2007, Washington Christian Academy has been in the process of constructing a new facility in Olney, Maryland. This new building will increase the space available drastically and increases opportunities for the school to expand. While it is in a beautiful, seemingly remote location on the outside of Olney, it is a short three mile drive to the heart of the area, and right next to Georgia Ave. and the future Intercounty Connector. The building is scheduled to complete sometime in the summer of 2008. [The Future at WCA, Phase 1. Information about the first phase of the new WCA campus [http://washingtonchristian.org/page05c4.shtml] ] It is built on approximately 60 acres of land and has a baseball field and soccer field.
