List of characters in Courage the Cowardly Dog

The following is a list of characters from the Cartoon Network series "Courage the Cowardly Dog".

Main characters

Courage, the Cowardly Dog

* Voiced by: Marty Grabstein

Courage is an overly frightened dog who lives in Nowhere, Kansas. He was abandoned as a puppy after his parents were sent into outer space, but was adopted by Muriel Bagge. Her husband, Eustace, regularly mistreats him. Despite his name, Courage is a genuine coward, but he will still go to great lengths to protect his owners. He got his name when Muriel thought he was brave when she found him. Courage speaks English to the viewers and some of the animal characters in the series, but in gibberish to humans. He is able to briefly transform into any person, creature or object, though he retains his pink coloration.

He was voiced by Howard Hoffman in the pilot, and Marty Grabstein in the series.

Muriel Bagge

* Voiced by: Thea White

Muriel Bagge is a kindly and elderly Scottish woman who took Courage in when he was a puppy. She likes tea and usually tends her garden, has a fondness for cookery, plays the sitar, or watches television.

Eustace Bagge

* Voiced by: Arthur Anderson

Eustace Bagge is a grumpy and cruel old farmer who mistreats Courage. When Courage manages to defeat the villain in each episode, Eustace often suffers a horrible fate, such as being mummified, possessed, or ejected into space. Despite his gruff nature, he often shows compassion and has worked alongside Courage to save Muriel more than once. He is also insecure due to not having teeth, having a hunched back, and being bald.

Lionel G. Wilson originally voiced the character, but left midway through the third season due to illness and was replaced by Arthur Anderson.

Recurring villains

Benton Tarantella

Benton is a former movie director that has become a zombie. He and his partner, Erroll Von Volkheim, would pose as movie producers to lure unsuspecting victims to their fates, killing twelve people. Eventually, they were jailed for their crimes. However, Von Volkheim was released from jail for good behaviour, while Tarantella died in prison. He first appears at the Bagges' house claiming he wants them to be in a movie he's making, but tricks them into filming a fake movie only to resurrect von Volkheim. His alter ego, Mr. Nasty, is similar to Eustace in identity and temperament, only with sunglasses and bluish skin.

Katz

* Voiced by: Paul Schoeffler

Katz is a cat, and is Courage's main nemesis in the series. He specializes in scam businesses such as a vacation resort, a confectionary shop, and a submarine cruise line. He always cons Muriel and Eustace into trying whatever service he is providing, but Courage never falls for his schemes.

LeQuack

* Voiced by: Paul Schoeffler

LeQuack is another recurring villain. He is a French con artist duck that has a fake amnesia-specialist license, and comes to their house when Muriel suffers from amnesia. He often ends an episode with the phrase, "You have not seen the last of LeQuack."

The Chicken from Outer Space

* Voiced by: Howard Hoffman

He is the first villain of the series. He first appears and tries to take over the farm, and ends up being shot by his own laser gun by Courage. He appears in a later episode as a cooked chicken, missing its head and attempts to steal Eustace's head. His three-headed son appears in one epside.

Minor characters

Computer (Simon Prebble) - Courage's computer that speaks with a British accent and gives him advice on how to deal with crazy situations. He is very sarcastic towards Courage and has a habit of regularly cracking jokes in any situation.

Courage's Parents (Susan Yezzi and Tom Kenny) - Not much is known about his parents, as they were seen only in a few episodes, with one episode centering on flashbacks to his parents in the veterinarian's office, where Courage last saw his parents. They were launched into space by the veterinarian, and Courage avoided a similar fate by escaping through a garbage chute, where he was found by Muriel. The veterinarian was trapped in the rocket, and transported to the planet where Courage's parents and other dogs resided.

Di Lung (Tim Chi Ly) - Inventor and is the creator of Mecha Courage. He is very inconsiderate at most times, and even gets caught in the middle of the chaos going on in Nowhere. He has twin aunts; one evil and the other good. Tim Chi Ly also serves as one of the show's animators.

Dr. Vindaloo (Paul Schoeffler) - An Indian doctor with a thick accent, whom Eustace and Muriel see when something is wrong. He is one of the very few characters in the series who can perfectly understand what Courage is trying to say. He diagnoses his patients as not having serious problems or that there is nothing that he can do. The sign on his office door reads, "Dr. Vindaloo, M.D. Quack."

Ma Bagge (Billie Lou Watt) - Eustace's mother, with whom he shares a love-hate relationship. Like him she is actually bald but wears a wig and looks almost identical to her son, but much shorter. Like Eustace, Ma is insecure due to being bald, but she does have her teeth.

General and The Lieutenant - They take pleasure in fighting each other and are, usually, doing so while trying to solve an important problem, often badly hurting each other by shooting each other or dropping sixteen-ton weights on each other.

Nowhere Newsman - He is the newsreporter of Nowhere, Kansas. He introduces every episode stating, "We interrupt this program to bring you the "Courage the Cowardly Dog Show."

Shirley the Medium (Mary Testa) - A Chihuahua dressed as a gypsy fortune teller who lives in, and sells junk out of, her caravan. When giving Courage advice, she normally plays a saxophone between sentences, sometimes with an extended solo at the end.

The Duck Brothers - Three brother ducks from outer space; one of them is always laying eggs even though he is male. They were voiced by Ringo Starr in "The Duck Brothers", and then Samuel Vincent in "Ball of Revenge".

Space Dino - Dinosaur-like creature that sits on a meteor outside Earth's atmosphere, and is always seen with a tennis racket, which he uses to hit celestial objects.
