Minnesota was built by John Jacob Spengler as atailor shop in 1854; he sewed uniforms for Union Soldiers in the Civil War, while he and his family lived in the back room of the building. The one-story two-room building features abarrel-vault ceiling in the front room and a pressedtin ceiling in the back room. Other architectural elements includeVictorian Gothic pendants, spindles, and quatro-foils in an Eastlake style. In 1887 the building was sold to the Taylors Falls Library Association for use as a library.cite book|title=The National Register of Historic Places in Minnesota|last=Nord|first=Mary Ann|publisher=Minnesota Historical Society |date=2003|isbn=0-87351-448-3] [cite web| title =Branch Street Library, Taylors Falls, Chisago County, MN| publisher =Library of Congress| work=Historic American Buildings Survey| url =http://memory.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/S?pp/hh:@field(SUBJ+@od1(MINNESOTA--Chisago+County--Taylors+Falls))| accessdate = 2007-11-12] [cite web| title =1880s: Taylors Falls Public Library| work =Gateways through the Years| publisher =Minnesota Historical Society| url =http://nrhp.mnhs.org/property_overview.cfm?propertyID=65| accessdate =2007-11-12] That use continues today; in 2007 the library received a grant from theBill and Melinda Gates Foundation , which seeks to provideinformation technology to residents of rural communities.
