* 8 January - The Koöperatiewe Wijnbouwers Vereniging van Zuid-Afrika (KWV), "Co-operative Winemakers' Society of South Africa", is founded in Paarl, Western Cape
* 2 April - Victoria College becomes the Stellenbosch University
* 4 June - "RMS Kenilworth Castle", one of the Union-Castle Line's steamers collided with her escort destroyer HMS Rival while trying to avoid her other escort, the cruiser HMS Kent.
* 5 June - The afrikaner Broederbond, a confidential cultural organisation, is founded in Johannesburg
