Mahasher ("Tor putitora"), also known as the or Himalayan Mahasher or Golden Mahasher, is a fish of the family Cyprinidae, found in Pakistan and southern Asia generally. In Pakistan, it is found in the Kunhar river and the Jhelum river.

Etymology

The name Mahasher is commonly used in Urdu, Punjabi and Kashmiri languages in Pakistan for this fish and is said to be made up of two local words: Maha = big and sher = lion as it ascends in the hilly rivers and streams of Himalaya courageously.
