Peter Oundjian (born 1955,
Toronto ,Ontario ,Canada ) is aviolinist and conductor, the youngest of five children from an Armenian father and English mother. He was educated inEngland , where he began studying the violin at age seven with Manoug Parikian. He then attended theRoyal College of Music . He went to New York to study at theJuilliard School withIvan Galamian ,Itzhak Perlman , andDorothy Delay .In 1980, he won First Prize at the International Violin Competition in
Viña del Mar ,Chile . Oundjian went on to hold an illustrious career as the first violinist of theTokyo String Quartet for 14 years. He is also the Artistic Advisor and Principal Guest Conductor of the Caramoor International Music Festival. He was the Principal Guest Conductor of the

His guest-conducting appearances have been with the Chicago, San Francisco, Detroit, St. Louis and Berlin Symphonies, The Philadelphia Orchestra, Saarbrücken Radio Symphony Orchestra, theCity of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and the Tonhalle Orchester inZurich . For four summers, he led The Philadelphia Orchestra's "Absolutely Mozart" Festival.Oundjian was appointed the Music Director of the
Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO) in January2003 , and assumed the post in2004 .
