The Sea Fish Industry Authority (usually referred to as Seafish) is a not for profit, UK non-departmental public body, established in 1981. Seafish exists to promote the efficiency of the UK seafood industry, the marketing and consumption of seafood products and to provide information and advice to the industry, media and the public.
Seafish is funded by a levy across all sectors of the fishing and seafood industry. This levy is due on the first sale of all sea fish (excluding salmon and trout species), shellfish and sea fish products - including fish meal - landed in the United Kingdom. The levy is also due on fish imported into the UK as well as catches of fish landed in the UK.
Seafish serves the whole of the UK and is accountable to the four UK fisheries administrations: the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA); the Scottish Government Marine Directorate; the Welsh Assembly Government (WAG) and the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Northern Ireland (DARDNI).
Seafish has its administrative base in the Scottish city of Edinburgh and has its research & development base near the English town of Grimsby in Humberside.
History
Seafish was established in the United Kingdom under the Fisheries Act 1981 through the amalgamation of the Herring Industry Board and the White Fish Authority.
