Pacific Collegiate Hockey Association

The Pacific Collegiate Hockey Association was originally dubbed the Southern California Collegiate Hockey Association when it began in 1972. The three original charter members were Cal State Northridge, UCLA and Cal Tech. The league is currently made up of nine teams. They include eight schools from California and one from Arizona. The conference is divided into two divisions—the Northern and Southern Divisions. [http://www.csufresno.edu/StudentOrgs/icehockey/about.html] Teams from this conference compete in Division 3 of the American Collegiate Hockey Association. At the end of the regular season the PCHA Playoffs, rotated to different venues yearly, decide who will win the Adams Cup. The cup is named after Cary Adams who helped start the league and helped start the team at Cal. State Northridge. The current two time defending Adams Cup champion is San Diego State University. Although SDSU will not get the chance to three-peat as they have moved up to Division 2. The PCHA sent two teams to the National Tournament in 2008. Those schools were SDSU and Northern Arizona. PCHA Rivalries

There are many rivalries within the PCHA. Most were started due to schools being geographically close together.

*CSUN vs. COCYet another geographically convenient rivalry. This rivalry is especially bitter due to the fact some COC players transfer to CSUN to finish out their collegiate careers. These two teams know each other very well. Similar to the Battle of San Diego (UC San Diego versus San Diego State), both teams have been good enough to make Nationals the last couple of years so their games have been important and physical. COC has won a majority of the games between these two teams the last couple of years. In the 2006-2007 season, CSUN has had a lead going into the third period at home and managed to lose the games. However, the 2007-08 season has been hard for COC and they have not won a game as of 8 January 2008. In their clash with CSUN this season, they lost 15-4 at home. Due to a poor showing during the season, COC decided to forfeit their last game of the season against CSUN.

Emerging Rivalries

These are rivalries that have developed within the last year or two.

*NAU vs. CSUNThe rivalry started when CSUN went to Flagstaff, AZ in 2006 and swept a two game weekend series with NAU. NAU joined the PCHA in 2007 and lost twice to CSUN in the regular season, this time in Northridge. The PCHA playoffs were held in Flagstaff a few weeks later, however after one of the teams pulled out at the last minute, Northridge was forced to play two games in one day and dropped their second game of the day to NAU in the semi-finals. In the 2007-08 season the teams split a two game regular season weekend. The rivalry now stands at 5-2 for Northridge.
