Doug Currie was elected as Liberal MLA District 11, Charlottetown - Parkdale on May 28, 2007. He was appointed Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development and Attorney General on January 13, 2010 by Premier Robert Ghiz.

Mr. Currie grew up in District 11 Charlottetown - Parkdale and has spent most of his life living, working and communicating with the residents of the district. He holds a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education from the University of Prince Edward Island and also holds a Master of Education from the University of New Brunswick.

Mr. Currie has nineteen years of educational experience and before his appointment to Cabinet was the principal at Birchwood Intermediate School. Mr. Currie’s extensive background has given him a better understanding of the major challenges that society is facing today. He is a proven leader and knows the value of teamwork.

In his previous role as Minister of Health, Mr. Currie has been instrumental in bringing major enhancements to the Prince Edward Island health system. These enhancements are being led under the umbrella of the Integrated Health System Project, an extensive initiative, focused on operational improvements, service realignment and enhanced health services for all Islanders. The work of this project is guided by the Government's overall vision of One Island Future - One Island Health System.

Mr. Currie has demonstrated his strong leadership skills and ability to work as a team player by introducing significant initiatives, such as: Family Medicine Residency Program; establishment of Recruitment and Retention Secretariat; Youth Substance Use and Addictions Strategy; Palliative Home Care Drug Program; Healthy Aging Strategy, which includes a major manor replacement program; and an Organized Stroke Care Model, just to name a few.

Mr. Currie has also provided leadership at the national level, in particular in 2008 when Prince Edward Island was the lead jurisdiction for Federal, Provincial and Territorial (FPT) health departments. He served as FPT co-chair with the federal Minister of Health. Mr. Currie also represented Provincial and Territorial Ministries of Health as part of the Canadian delegation to the World Health Organization Forum in Geneva, Switzerland, in May 2008.

During his time in Education and Early Childhood Development, he has played a vital role in the major initiatives pursued by the department over the last year. These initiatives most notably include the amalgamation of the kindergarten sector across Prince Edward Island into the public school system, and the transition from an early childhood care model to a model focusing on early childhood learning for children under 5. This initiative was demonstrated with the establishment of Early Years Centers (EYCs) across the province. Mr. Currie was also chosen to represent Canadian Ministers of Education Council (CMEC) in New York City for the international summit on the teaching profession.

Mr. Currie’s other interests include running, fitness activities and spending time with family. He and his wife Stephanie live in Charlottetown with their two young daughters - Hallie and Casey.

Born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island,[1] Currie received a BA and BEd from the University of Prince Edward Island and a M.Ed. from the University of New Brunswick. Currie taught school and was principal of Birchwood Intermediate School. He served as Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations for the University of Prince Edward Island.
