footnotes =Brandon Carter (born 1942) is an
Australia n theoretical physicist, best known for his work on the properties ofblack holes and for being the first to name and employ theanthropic principle in its contemporary form. He is a researcher at theMeudon campus of theLaboratoire Univers et Théories , part of theCNRS .After studying at
Cambridge under Dennis Sciama, Carter made several important contributions to thegolden age of general relativity . He found the exact solution of thegeodesic equation s for the Kerr/Newman electrovacuum solution, and themaximal analytic extension of this solution. In the process, he discovered the extraordinary "fourth constant of motion" and theKilling-Yano tensor . Together withWerner Israel andStephen Hawking , he proved theno-hair theorem ingeneral relativity , stating that all stationaryblack hole s are completely characterized bymass ,charge , andangular momentum . More recently, Carter, Chachoua, and Chamel (2005) have formulated a relativistic theory of elastic deformations inneutron star s.ee also
