Engineered information

Engineered information

Engineered information describes the phenomenon of information that has been created and situated in space with the express intention of being unexpectedly discovered by its receivers. The term engineered information is closely related to two concepts currently developed in the areas of information behavior and human-computer interaction: “encountered information” — information that is happened upon while engaged in other information seeking activities (Erdelez 2004) — and “ambient information” — information that is displayed to make use of people’s perceptual sensing of the physical environment, usually incorporating changes in lights, smells, or movement of objects as a mean of attracting passersby (Streitz 2003).

Engineered information describes a concept than is broader in scope and includes both ambient and encountered information, and specifically highlights the intention behind and situating of information for unexpected encounter.
