- George Weyman
George Weyman, the inventor of Copenhagen, started Copenhagen [http://www.freshcope.com] tobacco company in 1822 in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, it is the oldest tobacco company in the United States. Often found on a can of Copenhagen is the WC symbol, meaning Weyman's Copenhagen. Copenhagen was one of the only businesses to survive the Pittsburgh fires.
Weyman invented a special way to make moist snuff, giving Copenhagen the bold and distinctive it has today. He would make the tobacco in his factory and instead of packaging it and shipping it out, he would place it in oak barrels and let it age for several years, giving it the bold taste.
In the 1860's George Weyman relinquished control of the tobacco company, and gave it to his sons, William and Benjamin. Following their father's death in the 1860's, they adopted the name Weyman & Bros. Today Copenhagen is manufactured by US Smokeless Tobacco [http://www.ussmokeless.com]
Copenhagen's design of the fiberboard w/ a metal lid was designed in the early 1900's and is still used today.
