The Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) is an organisation aiming to promote the sustainable development of tourism in the Asia-Pacific region.

History

The organisation began in either 1951 [http://www.pata.org/patasite/index.php?id=9 PATA website] ] or 1952 Douglas N. and Douglas, N. (1996) "Tourism in the Pacific: historical factors" in Hall, C.M. and Page, S.F. (eds) "Tourism in the Pacific: Issues and Cases" London: England] after an initial meeting of representatives of 12 Pacific nations. This meeting was in Honolulu, Hawai'i and the group named themselves the 'Pacific Interim Travel Association' (PITA) which became the 'Pacific Area Travel Association' (PATA) in 1953. In 1961, PATA paid the firm Checchi and Company compile the "Future of Tourism in the Pacific and Far East" report Dougals, N. (1994) 'Electric shadows in the South Seas: The Pacific Islands in film', in D. Aoki (ed.) "Moving Images of the Pacific Islands; A Guide to Films and Video", Honolulu: Center for Pacific Islands Studies pp.3-19 ASIN: B000IVJYV2] , however many destinations, such as Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu, were omitted.
