These hills are on the edges of the border of Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary in the state of Kerala towards the South west. On the south, Palghat Gap divides the Western Ghats and the Idukki Ranges. The lower slopes of hills now have coffee and tea plantations as well as teak forests of great economic value.

The name “" Annaimalai "” comes from the tamil word " Anai " that means elephant and " Malai " that means hill, thus we have " Hill of the Elephant ". The 985 km² Indira Gandhi National Park in these hills is located at an altitude of 1,400 m in the Western Ghats near Pollachi.

Fauna

Numerous species of fauna can be seen including Indian elephants, gaur, Water buffalo, tigre, panthers, Bears, pangolín, macacos, green Mugger crocodile] s, doves and wild cats.

Irrigation Projects

Many rivers and dams exists in the area including: the Aliayar river, the Kaddambarrai river, the Neerar river, the Sholayar Dam [one of the greatest of its classes in Asia). Mannambhally is the greatest of all the Parimbakollam rivers.

Tourism

The best time to visit this area is between the months of November until mid May. The monsoons are heavy. The area receives annual precipitation of 175 to 200 inches. The closest airport is in Coimbatore and the nearest railroad station is in Pollachi.
