Reinstein Woods Nature Preserve

Reinstein Woods Nature Preserve is a limited access conservation area located in the Town of Cheektowaga in Erie County, New York, USA. An Environmental Education Center is located at the entrance to this area.

Only part of the preserve is open to unaccompanied visitors, but scheduled, guided tours are made several times each week.

Facilities

The preserve has 292 acres of wetlands and forest, surrounded by suburban development. However, neighboring Stiglmeier Town Park increases the extant of the undeveloped area.

The Environmental Education Center contains an exhibit area and classrooms.

The Lily Ponds Loop is a self-guided interpretive trail, open to the general public. Explanatory brochures are available for this half mile walk. Part of the trail is a short boardwalk overlooking the lily pond. Many more trails pass through the preserve, but are limited to guided tours only.

History

The land was originally the private preserve of Dr. Victor Reinstein. He improved the tract by planting trees and adding ponds.

The State of New York assumed control of this preserve in 1986.

Geography

The preserve is located on Honorine Drive, a dead end street, running south of Como Park Boulevard, which connects NY Route 277 (Union Road) to NY Route 78 (Transit Road).
