Luna Plantation was a
quail hunting plantation located in northern Leon County,Florida ,United States established by Lloyd C. Griscom.Lloyd C. Griscom was the son of Clement A. Griscom from
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania . Clement was a shipping magnate, President of theRed Star Line andAmerican Line .When Clement A. Griscom died on October 19, 1916,
Horseshoe Plantation was divided up and part sold. Lloyd C. Griscom, Clement's son received convert|4000|acre|km2 on the west side naming it Luna Plantation while his sisterFrances C. Griscom , a sportswoman, received convert|7000|acre|km2 of the old plantation to the east and named itWater Oak Plantation . In 1916 during a well digging at Luna Plantation, equipment hit a bone layer from the
Miocene period of some 32-18 Mya. Skeletal remains of an ancient horse "Parahippus leonensis ", the dog-like "Osbornodon iamonensis", the dog-likeTemnocyonines , the bear-dog "Amphicyon ", the rhinoceros "Aphelops ", and an ancient camel called "Nothokemus " were recovered from the site.
