Biography

He was the President of the International Navigation Co., and by extension, the Red Star Line and the American Line from 1888 to the 1902 merger into the International Mercantile Marine, and also helped to create those companies, originally serving as Vice-President from their foundation in 1871. He is noteworthy for his efforts to build an all-American merchant marine to rival those of shipping powers Britain and Germany, and was instrumental in convincing J. Pierpont Morgan to finance the creation of the IMM shipping trust company. He later served as the IMM's first President. Griscom established and owned a private hunting plantation north of Tallahassee, Florida called Horseshoe Plantation.

He died of a stroke at the age of 71.
