A584 road

A584 road

The A584 is a road in England that runs from Clifton, near Preston, to Little Bispham, north of Blackpool in Lancashire.

The road runs a total distance of approximately 20 miles, largely following the coastline of the Fylde peninsula, and for seven miles forms Blackpool's promenade. It begins in Clifton, west of Preston, as a junction on the A583 Blackpool Road. As Preston New Road, it runs west through Freckleton and Warton for over five miles to Lytham where it becomes the coast road. From here it continues west through Ansdell and St Annes-on-Sea following the coast as it turns to the north, as Clifton Drive. The road enters Blackpool on the coast at Starr Gate, near Blackpool Airport, about seven miles from Lytham. It continues north up the coast for a further seven miles, as Blackpool Promenade (called the Queen's Promenade after Gynn Square), passing many well-known landmarks, including the Pleasure Beach, the three piers and Blackpool Tower. The six mile stretch between Starr Gate and Bispham is the site of Blackpool Illuminations during the months of September and October. The road moves inland at Little Bispham and terminates where it meets the A587 Fleetwood Road. Between Starr Gate and Little Bispham, the road runs parallel with the tram tracks, but, except for a 200 yard stretch round the Metropole Hotel, near North Pier, the tracks and roadway are separated.
