Mulakulam is a quiet village in Kottayam district, Kerala, India and is situated on the banks of the River Muvatupuzha. The village is located about 40 kilometers from both Kottayam town (the district head quarters) and Kochi city (the commercial capital or Kerala). Piravom is the nearest town. It is lush green with thick vegetation, and old tharavads (old houses in Malayalam). The population of this village is about 2500 people. It is home to a family called the “Moosedathu Muramthookil”, believed to be one of the first few Brahmin family to embrace Christianity in 1100 AD. This family still owns close to 20% of the total area, which is about 10 square kilometers.

Agriculture, the land’s traditional and main occupation, is being phased out. Poor availability and high cost of labour coupled with low returns is the root cause. Industries like wooden handicrafts, burnt bricks manufacturing, sand rigging etc. have arise. Some of these unregulated industries add to the severe environmental hazards and pollution that is already contributed by Hindustan Newsprint Limited, a newspaper manufacturing giant which is located in a nearby village.

The Syrian Orthodox Church at Mulakulam was founded around 16th century A.D.[1][2]
