Background

Grayslake Central, originally known as Grayslake Community High School, was built in 1949 on Lake Street. It was originally fairly small but has since expanded over the years and now includes approximately 1,400 students. The school's mascot has for years been "Guido" the Ram. Grayslake Community High School was renamed Grayslake Central in 2004 when Grayslake North High School was built. The school's athletic department participates in the Fox Division of the Fox Valley Conference.

Rivalry

Grayslake Central and Grayslake North have developed a town rivalry. This is celebrated every year with Central vs. North athletic events within the FVC Fox Division. The Grayslake North/Grayslake Central football game is called "The Kick-off Classic". The Fall of 2006 was the first year that the varsity teams were able to compete. Grayslake Central beat Grayslake North 33-10 at home in the first match-up. The following year Grayslake North defeated Grayslake Central 31-6, but Central won both the Freshman and Sophomore games.

Grayslake Central's music program placed second in state in the Illinois High School Association in 2006. The school offers many teams and clubs students can participate in; the math team placed 4th in state 2007 in calculator team. Also, the school's debate team has been growing steadily. The school's science olympiad, led by senior Michael Reed, placed 1st in single A division in state in 2008, and the math team placed 2nd in state. Its music program placed 4th in state in 2008, as it was their first year after the complete split between Central's and North's music programs. Central's baseball program also won regional and sectional titles in the spring of 2006 and the basketball program won a regional title in 2008. The Grayslake Lacrosse Team previously coached by Howard Kravits, won the Division B State Championship in 2004, and placed 2nd in 2007 at the Division B State Championship, losing to Fenwick High School.
