Grayslake North High School is a high school located in Grayslake, Illinois and is part of Grayslake Community High School District 127.

Background

The high school was built in 2004 to lower class sizes at Grayslake Community High School (now Grayslake Central High School) on Lake Street. In the school's first year (2004-2005), it housed all of the districts ninth graders (about 700). Since then, it has housed only students north of Washington Street graduating in 2008 or later. The 2007-2008 school year is the first with all four classes represented.

Athletics

The Knights participate in the Fox Division of the Fox Valley Conference. Athletic teams for girls include tennis, cross country, and volleyball in the fall, basketball and bowling in the winter, cheerleading and poms in fall through winter, and track and field, soccer, and softball in the spring. The Varsity Cheerleaders took home FVC Champions this year, and were the first full team from North to go to State. Boys' teams include football, soccer, golf, and cross country in the fall, wrestling and basketball in the winter, and baseball, lacrosse, tennis, and track and field in the spring.

Other Activities

GNHS had their first junior prom during the 2006-2007 school year, called "A Knight to Remember." In 2007-2008, the theme for the homecoming dance in October was "Hollywood Knights," while the theme for the Turnabout dance on February 23 was "Dancing through the Decades."Clubs are also a big way of life. The current list of clubs includes an academic team, an art club, a student council, colorguard and winter guard, a computer club, drama/encore, an environmental club, a family and consumer science club, a French club, an international society, intramural sports, a jazz band, a LINK crew that helps incoming freshman adjust to high school, math team, a chapter of the National Honor Society, a student newspaper, peer mediation, a chapter of Students Against Destructive Decisions, a science olympiad team, a ski club, snowball, a Spanish club, a chapter of the International Thespian Society, and a yearbook committee, but the campus is still open for the creation of new clubs. 2007-2008 was the first year the honors music programs of the North and Central campuses were independent from one another.

The school's three academic clubs have all enjoyed considerable success at local competitions. The Math Team, which finished in second place at an Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics regional competition on February 23, 2008 at Antioch Community High School, had representation in several contests (Algebra I, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculator, Orals, Junior-Senior 8-person team) at the 2008 Illinois state competition on April 26, with the calculator team tying for second place with Grayslake Central in their respective division. The academic team finished fourth at the Fox Valley Conference tournament on February 18, 2008 and second at an Illinois High School Association regional competition on March 4 at Stevenson High School. The congressional debate team finished second at the FVC tournament in February and competed at the state level on April 19-20 at Northern Illinois University.
