* The Eastern Province Rugby Union is founded.
* 13 March De Beers Consolidated Mines Ltd. is founded in Kimberley.
* 30 October - Cecil Rhodes and the British South Africa Company swindles Lobengula out of Matabeleland in the Rudd Concession, named after Charles Rudd.
* The town of Amersfoort in what is now Mpumalanga Province is established around a Dutch Reformed Church built in 1876.
