chool organization

Gisborne Intermediate School is divided into four education teams. They each have their own individual colour and are named after local Gisborne rivers. The teams are: Taruheru (Green), Waipoa (Red), Waimata (Yellow) and Turanganui (Blue). These teams each have their own team leader. GisInt also use these teams at school events such as their athletics, swimming sports, cross country etc. Each team gets rewarded a certain amount of points for participating, place getting and good behavior.

Digitally Enhanced Classrooms

Gisborne Intermediate School is leading the way in the Gisborne Region with digital technology in classrooms. In 2007 Gisborne Intermediate opened two 'Digitally Enhanced Classrooms', one year 7 and one year 8 class. In 2008 two more of these classrooms were developed. These classrooms are taught by teachers passionate about Digital technology and teaching. The classrooms are armed with the very latest digital equipment such as digital microscopes, digital still and video cameras,Interactive Whiteboards etc. A typical digital lesson in either of these classes may go a little bit like this: Briefing on the projector and Interactive Whiteboard, then students go off into core groups and do their own activities relating to what subject they are doing, such as research on the internet for Topic Study, publishing work for writing, working with the teacher for maths or reading, Creating web pages or PowerPoint presentations on their current topic etc. The classes have not completely removed the need for pen and paper and they purposely have less computers than students to encourage sharing.

A quote from GisInts website:

The curriculum at Gisborne Intermediate is designed to educate the whole student and cater for the intellectual, social, physical and creative aspects of emerging adolescents. The curriculum is based on the National Curriculum which includes: Language and Languages, Mathematics, Science, Technology, Social Studies, The Arts, Health and Physical education and Key Competencies. With the exception of The Arts and Technology all curriculum is taught by a home room teacher.
All GisInt students learn in single year level classes.
Students complete the basic study of English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and Health and Physical Education with their class Teacher. Music, Art and Technology programmes are further developed through specialisation.

All classrooms (except for the digitally enhanced classrooms) will visit the I.T. suite at least once a week, to research or publish work. Classrooms all have Internet access through two ADSL lines for research purposes. The Internet is filtered to prevent access to inappropriate sites.

All pupils have the opportunity to learn a foreign language as part of the Friday ConnEctEd programme.
