Scarlett Mullen (River City)

Scarlett Mullen (River City)

Scarlett Bernadette Mullen (previously Adams) is a fictional character in the BBC Scotland soap, "River City" played by Sally Howitt.

Scarlett arrived in Sheildinch with her son Bob and daughter Kelly-Marie in an ice-cream van that broke down outside the Malik shop. She upset the locals immediately and ended her day by having a fight with Gina Buchanan, owner of the Oyster Café. The pair have sinced made up as Scarlett now works for Gina and at her wedding to Jimmy Mullen on 20 June 2008 Gina was her bridesmaid.

She had been evicted from her home, but moved into an empty flat in Sheildinch with her children. Shortly afterwards her husband Paddy Adams turned up having just been released from jail. Paddy was a violent man and had regularly beat Scarlett up during their marriage, mainly because he thought that she was being unfaithful to him. After his latest stunt in jail things proved to be no different and Scarlett was seen mostly at the receiving end of Paddy's fists. However Scarlett eventually stood up for herself when she witnessed her husband's brutal attack on their son Bob and she sent him packing.

Not long after Paddy's exit she found work burning DVDs for Billy Davies. They began an affair not long afterwards, but Scarlett ended it when she discovered that his adoptive daughter Olivia was the biological daughter of Bob's girlfriend Michelle.

During her time in Sheildinch Scarlett had developed a close friendship with Jimmy Mullen. Jimmy was infatuated with her, but Scarlett was oblivious and instead decided to make a play for the local priest. Suffering the humiliation of a rejection, Scarlett look towards Jimmy to console her and they ended up having a one-night stand. Jimmy was keen to pursue a relationship afterwards, but Scarlett told him that it had all been a terrible mistake. However she was later left stunned when she discovered that she had fallen pregnant by him and after deciding to keep the baby she gave birth to their daughter Madonna.

Scarlett is shown to be incredibly over-protective of her children and she would do anything for them. She was left devastated when her son Bob was nearly killed by gangster Lenny Murdoch and as a result has built up a long-running feud with Jimmy's wife Lydia Murdoch. Despite loving her children, she has also been tested severely by them. She has been estranged from daughter Kelly-Marie on several occasions, most recently due to her affair with Father Michael, the priest that Scarlett had originally had her eye on. She was also forced to shop her son Stevie to the police in order to stop him getting into more trouble.

Despite originally not wanting to pursue a relationship with Jimmy, Scarlett eventually realised that she did in fact love him after an accident left him wheelchair-bound. They began a relationship and despite the beginning being a bit rocky due to Jimmy's impotence they were happy together. They later got engaged and on 20 June 2008 they married in a double-wedding along with Bob and his fiancée Charlie Drummond. Their wedding was a joyous occasion, but unfortunately for Bob Charlie walked out of their ceremony.
