In enzymology, a 3beta(or 20alpha)-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (EC number|1.1.1.210) is an enzyme that catalyzes the chemical reaction

:5alpha-androstan-3beta,17beta-diol + NADP+ ightleftharpoons 17beta-hydroxy-5alpha-androstan-3-one + NADPH + H+

Thus, the two substrates of this enzyme are 5alpha-androstan-3beta,17beta-diol and NADP+, whereas its 3 products are 17beta-hydroxy-5alpha-androstan-3-one, NADPH, and H+.

This enzyme belongs to the family of oxidoreductases, specifically those acting on the CH-OH group of donor with NAD+ or NADP+ as acceptor, more specifically it is part of the group of hydroxysteroid dehydrogenases. The systematic name of this enzyme class is 3beta(or 20alpha)-hydroxysteroid:NADP+ oxidoreductase. Other names in common use include progesterone reductase, dehydrogenase, 3beta,20alpha-hydroxy steroid, and 3beta,20alpha-hydroxysteroid oxidoreductase.
