It crosses the country from north to south, starting atHorgoš border crossing withHungary and ending withPreševo border crossing withRepublic of Macedonia . As a part of thePan-European corridor X (along with routeE70 ) and connection among Serbian biggest cities it is one of vital highways for Serbian infrastructure, and significant works are undergoing for its reconstruction and enhancement.The highway consists of three major sections:
Horgoš –Subotica –Novi Sad –Belgrade (178 km),Belgrade –Niš (237 km) andNiš –Leskovac –Preševo –Macedonian border (152 km). Of those, only the middle one is a completedual carriageway . The northern section is being ehanced under a concession contract, while the enhancement southern one is financed bySerbian Government andHellenic Plan . Northern and central section are linked through the heart of the city of Belgrade, but completion of theBelgrade bypass will provide a separate transit route.References
