International Men's Day is an international holiday, celebrated on the first Saturday of November. It was suggested by
Mikhail Gorbachev and was supported by theUnited Nations inVienna , and other organisations [http://www.calend.ru/holidays/0/0/167/ (in Russian)] . The tradition began in1999 , probably by analogy toInternational Women's Day . It is a major day of global celebration for the economic, political and social achievements of men.Recognition and support of the day is limited; in
Malta it is celebrated onFebruary 7 , inUkraine onFebruary 23 , inPoland and inSlovenia (Forty Martyrs of Sebaste ) onMarch 10 , inBrazil onJuly 15 and inTrinidad and Tobago and inIndia onNovember 19 . In Norway it's celebrated onOctober 7 , and onNovember 25 in Canada. In Hungary it's celebrated onMay 19 , on thenameday of Ivó and Milán, although it isn't as spread as women's day.Also,
Russia andKyrgyzstan celebrateDefender of the Fatherland Day onFebruary 23 , which in recent times has essentially become these countries' version of International Men's Day. In Colombia, it has been accepted as 23rd March, after Saint Joseph's day.Plans are afoot to recognise International Men's Day in the

Indian Men's rights organisation
Save Indian Family has started an International campaign to build consensus on IMD on November 19th. As a first step, it has accepted 19th November to be celebrated in India as Men's Day. With this at least 20% of world's population accepts 19th November as International Men's Day.ee also
