Images of England

Images of England is a heritage initiative run by the National Monuments Record (NMR), the public archive of English Heritage. The aim of the project was to photograph every listed building and object (some 370,000) in England and to make the images freely available on the Web. The project started in October 1999, completing September 2007, with over 320,000 images on the website. The project was funded by English Heritage and the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Further images were added to the website in April 2008 bringing the total to 322,868.

The Images of England website states::"Images of England" is a snapshot of the buildings listed at the turn of the millennium; it is not an up-to-date record of all currently listed buildings. The listing status and descriptions shown on the Images of England website are the listings as at February 2001. Any amendments to the listings since that date are not included on this website.

:The photographs accompanying the listings have been taken over a period of time and will not be updated if changes are made to the buildings.

The database includes houses, churches, bridges, tombs, telephone boxes and milestones. Each entry on the database consists of a single, representative photograph and a text listing, written by historic building experts within English Heritage.

In early 2002, the Country Landowners Association (now Country Land and Business Association) [http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/1837501.stm raised concerns] over the security implications of photographs of residential properties made available on the Images of England website. In response, English Heritage introduced an [http://www.imagesofengland.org.uk/enquiry/default.aspx?pid=5&Category=7#133 exemption scheme] , whereby owners of listed buildings with a maximum of two households are able to register for exclusion from the database. Photographs of the properties will still be taken, where these are visible from public land, but the images will be not be made available online until the year 2013.
