Central Middle School is a comprehensive middle school located at 3611 East Linwood Boulevard in Kansas City, Missouri. It is part of the Kansas City, Missouri School District. The school is located behind Central High School at the corner of Linwood and Cleveland.

Central Middle was Kansas City's first junior high school and also one of the first junior high schools in the country.

History

The school was termed the "first million dollar school". It was founded in 1924 and cost about $900,000 to build, a considerable sum of money then. The architect was Charles A. Smith who designed it in the Neo-Classical style. A reconstruction took place in 1984.

It is the only school building in the Kansas City, Missouri School District to have a ramp that winds back and forth from the first floor to the third floor. It includes two gymnasiums and an auditorium that seats 1700. There is a swimming pool which has now fallen into disuse. Security guards were given awards in April 1992 after confiscating several guns. Gun shots were fired outside the school at lunchtime on September 14, 2005. Homework Zone

The school participates in an after-school helpline called "Homework Zone" where teachers volunteer to staff a helpline to deal with questions from students.
