Efford

Efford is a large mostly post-war suburb of Plymouth in the English county of Devon.

It stands on high hill ground above the Laira estuary of the River Plym and variously offers views over long distances: to the north across Dartmoor the east across the South Hams of Devon and also to the south. It is predominantly local authority and housing association properties and is routinely and fairly described by the Plymouth local Herald newspaper as being a rough and uncontrolled district.Fact|date=October 2007Firemen and their equipment have been attacked while attending early and dangerously constructed bonfires in October 2007.Some argue that the area is typically Janner like, uneducated, provincial and ignorant. The area nonetheless remains popular and is convenient for schools the city centre and communications.

Efford and the surrounding area have a lasting military significance. Efford Fort was one of the ring of early Victorian Palmerston's 'Follys' built to provide defence from risk of french invasion. The area was also heavily occupied by a vast American army during the preparations for D-Day. This is still remember by the naming of a part of Efford as little America and many of the post-war housing developments being given transatlantic nametags such as California Gardens, Oregon Way etc.
