Denysenko was excommunicated by the Council of Bishops of theRussian Orthodox Church in 1997, an action, however, which he does not recognize. The modern history of the church begins in August 1989, when the parish of the Church of Ss. Peter & Paul in
Lviv announced its breach with theRussian Orthodox Church under thePatriarch of Moscow .Fact|date=June 2007In June 1990, Metropolitan Mstyslav was elected "
in absentia " as the church's head under the title of the "Patriarch of Kiev and All Rus'-Ukraine".Patriarch Mstyslav was the last surviving hierarch of the founders ofUkrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church . He was enthroned in November at St. Sophia Cathedral.Patriarch Mstyslav (Skrypnyk) was reposed in June 1993 and was succeeded in October byPatriarch Volodomyr (Romaniuk) . Patriarch Volodomyr was later reposed in July 1995. His funeral was held in near the St. Sophia Cathedral inKiev and was marked by a clash between the funeral procession and law-enforcement forces.
