The Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) platform is based on Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) technology. This technology allows the Mems-ID chips to be integrated directly into individual medical devices, such as surgical instruments, and survive high-temperature autoclave and gamma irradiation sterilization processes. In comparison, electronic RFID chips are usually destroyed by these processes.
Automated tracking of surgical instruments can assist in delivering many benefits over existing methods, including:
- reducing risk of errors and thus improving patient safety
- reducing insurance premiums and legal costs
- improving regulatory compliance and infection control by electronically identifying use of medical devices, including when they are associated with an adverse event
- improving inventory control and supply chain logistics
- significant cost savings over existing manual and labor-intensive tracking processes
Mems-ID has an office in San Diego, California, United States with R&D activities currently performed in Melbourne, Australia.
