Coral Academy of Science is a public charter school located on East 9th Street in Reno, Nevada. It was founded in 2000 with grades 7-10, over the years it has grown, now CAS serves grades K-12 in northern Nevada. The school is accredited by NAAS and it has been a high achieving school several years in a row. Its first senior class graduated in 2006 and it consisted of 6 students, all of which attended the University of Nevada Reno after graduating. In 2007, the new [Las Vegas] http://www.coralacademylv.org school opened its doors for students in Las Vegas, Nevada

Achievements 2009-2010 Achievements

  • A Coral Academy fourth grader, Michael Schenk scored high enough on his written exam to qualify to go to the Nevada state competition organized by National Geographic Bee.
  • Coral Academy chemistry teacher and coach of the Science Olympiad team, Mr. Tuncer receives Nevada Science Olympiad Coach of the Year award in the recent state Science Olympiad held on March 6, 2010 in Las Vegas.
  • Middle School Science Olympiad Team was honored by receiving second place in the Nevada State Science Olympiads.
  • Art students received many top prizes in Fair Housing Contest 2010. CAS Students received many 1st places and got grand prizes.
  • CAS Elementary celebrated National Heart Month by participating in Jump Rope For Heart. Nine-teen students helped raise $1188.00 for the American Heart Association.
  • CAS High School Team received first place in the Northern Nevada regional Science Olympiads. Middle school team placed second.
  • CAS 8th grade student Alexander Parr received 1st place in the Countdown Round of Northern Nevada MathCounts competition. Mathcounts Team placed 3rd in the Northern Nevada MathCounts competition and advanced to state finals. Coral Academy of Science received the most improved award the Northern Nevada MathCounts competition.
  • Coral Academy Students placed third, fourth and sixth in the Washoe County Spelling Bee
  • In the 2010 Nevada Museum of Art Scholastic contest, two 8th grade students received Silver Key awards and two 8th grade students received Gold Key Awards. One Senior placed as 12th grade Art Portfolio Winner.
  • Coral Academy of Science's Future City Team, sponsored by the school computer teacher Mr. Ocel, was honored with the 2nd place in the Northern Nevada Future Cities competition.
  • Natalie Van Hoozer, a CAS 8th grade student, received first place in the essay contest organized by the Nevada Air National Guard and The Northern Nevada Black Cultural Awareness Society.
  • PTC sponsored Harvest parents brought hundreds of students and parents together.
  • School continued to hold its accreditation by NAAS with commendations in the annual review report.
  • Coral Academy increased its student population by 35% to 802 students.

Achievements in 2008-2009 School Year

All three Coral Academy schools made adequate yearly progress (AYP) as mandated by NCLB. Elementary school received ‘High Achieving Status.’ Coral Academy ranked in top 1500 High Schools nationwide according to recent study conducted by Newsweek. CAS Biology teacher, Mr. Martin Braik, received the Outstanding Biology Teacher Award (OBTA) for Nevada. Elementary students received 3rd Place (Ms. Mundy) and Honorable Mention (Ms. Morris) in the Judge Foley Poster and Essay Contest. Night of the Arts hosted by Ms. Flores and Mrs. Farnsworth attracted many art lovers to elementary school. A CAS freshman placed 3rd in the 7th International Turkish Olympiads in the poetry contest. Another student received 4th place in singing contest. CAS Teacher, Mr. Braik, received the co-teacher of the year award from Governor Gibbons in the annual recognition event organized by Charter School Association of Nevada. CAS Arts Students Received Many Places in 2009 Jr. Duck Stamp Contest. This was another successful year for our Art Department; we placed 29 High School students and have become known for our Duck work. CAS Elementary Garden Club students planted and harvested vegetables in their self designed and built farms. CAS Turkish Olympiads Folk Dance Team received 1st place again in the second Turkish Language and Performing Arts Contest in the US West Regionals. A CAS Student placed second in the singing contest. A CAS student received the 1st Place and won a Laptop in the Technology Integrated Education (TIE) Contest held by ACCORD Institute. The 2009 Fair Housing Poster contest was another rewarding year for our school and many of our students. This was our 6th year participating and we had numerous winners. 4th Annual Multicultural Dinner, Dine in Tokyo, attracted more than one hundred students and parents. Jump Rope Contest fundraising sponsored by Elementary school PE Teacher, Miss Savolt raised money for equipment. MS Science Olympiads team got 2nd place in the state wide Science Olympiads. HS team received 4th place. CAS Annual Accreditation progress commended by the Northwest Association of Accredited Schools. Two high school art students took 1st and 3rd place in the Judge Foley "Law Day" Poster contest. CAS Elementary 5th grade student took 2nd place in the Nevada Division of Wildlife Free Fishing Day Poster contest. High School Science Bowl Team took the 7th place out of 32 teams from NV, CA, AZ and UT in the Science Bowl Competitions sponsored by Department of Energy. Elementary school had a very successful coat drive for needy children in the community. Middle School MathCounts team successfully competed in the Annual MathCounts Competition. The fourth Annual MathMatters Competition, sponsored by CAS, gathered brilliant 4th and 5th grade mathematicians to the school. 8 CAS students placed in the top 20. Many Coral Academy of Science high school students received Silver Key Awards in the Nevada Museum Scholastic awards contest. CAS SimCity team placed 3rd and 5th at the regional SimCity Future Cities competition. Coral Academy Junior, Jamesha Williams, placed 3rd at the Washoe County Poetry Out Loud Contest. Annual Holly Fest, hosted by CAS PTC, was fun and a big fundraiser for the school. CAS Middle School Robotics team received the Innovative Solution Award at the International FIRST Robotics Competition in Las Vegas. Elementary School Fall Festival featured chili cook-off and pumpkin contest. The participation was huge. Mr. Smith and his English classes became National Novel Writing Month’s (NaNoWriMo) winners. Coral Academy delivered barrels of food to Food Bank food drive. CAS continued to hold its accreditation status with Northwest Association of Accredited Schools. Harvest Festival, hosted by CAS PTC, brought hundreds of teachers, parents and students together. Coral Academy Middle and High Students have a gym and newly landscaped playground areas. Coral Academy Elementary moved into its new beautiful location.

Achievements in 2007-2008 School Year

Coral Academy welcomed 2nd and 3rd graders to its campus. CAS students showed the strength of our art programs by getting the majority of the awards at the Fair Housing Contest. CAS High School Robotics team represented Northern Nevada Successfully at the International FIRST Robotics Competition in Las Vegas. CAS continued to hold its accreditation status with Northwest Association of Accredited Schools. Coral Academy was the most award receiving school at the Regional Science and Engineering Fair by getting several first, second and third places. The Third Annual MathMatters Competition, sponsored by CAS, attracted close to one hundred brilliant 5th grade mathematicians to our school. CAS students participated in Spelling Bee Contest. CAS MathCounts Team received 4th place in Northern Nevada. HS Science Olympiads team received the 3rd place, MS team received the 5th place in Nevada Regional. High school Robotics represented Northern Nevada very well by bringing lots of medals back home. CAS hosted two multicultural dinners; Dine in New Delhi and Dine in Mexico City. CAS sent two finalists to in Poetry Out Loud Contest. CAS SimCity team placed 3rd at the regional SimCity competition. CAS hosted local exam of U.S. National Chemistry Olympiads for Sierra Nevada Section. CAS Community celebrated the National Charter School week with activities including a multicultural dinner and Shakespeare Festival. CAS Elementary School is moving to new location at Valley Road right at the foothills of the university campus.

Achievements in 2006-2007 School Year

CAS completed its two-year-long self study and is accredited for the fullest term given, six years from the NAAS. CAS SimCity team placed 2nd at the regional SimCity competition. CAS SimCity teacher earned special recognition at regional SimCity competition. The HS Science Olympiad Team won the first place, MS Science Olympiad Team won the second place at Nevada State Science Olympiads. High School Science Olympiad Team represented the state of Nevada at national competitions. CAS received a $ 76,000 dissemination grant and replicated its K-12 college preparatory educational model in Las Vegas. A CAS student got a $ 5,000 grant from Nickelodeon for play equipments. CAS held its 7th annual school-wide Science Fair with over 300 Projects. CAS welcomed 4th and 5th graders to its campus. CAS received multiple first, second, and third places at regional science and engineering fair. One student from CAS was invited to The Intel ISEF. The only high school in northern Nevada participating in US National Chemistry Olympiads.

Achievements in 2005-2006 School Year

CAS became the only selected charter school as “Highlighted Nevada School” by the Nevada Department of Education. CAS received approval from the WCSD Trustees to become a K-12 school beginning in the 2006-2007 school year. CAS completed the first part of six years improvement plan for accreditation site visit. CAS held its 6th annual school-wide Science Fair with 160 Projects. CAS added seven classrooms to accommodate 42% enrollment increase. The MathCounts team placed second in the regionals and fifth at the state level. The Science Olympiads Team represented CAS at the Nevada Science Olympiads in Carson City and took second place. A CAS student took second place in Poetry Out Loud Competition at the state level. CAS hosted the Readers Digest Word Power Challenge competition at the Boys and Girls club and one of our students placed 1st.

Achievements in 2004-2005 School Year

Coral Academy of Science (CAS) is accredited through Northwest Association of Accredited Schools. CAS was found in compliance in all areas during the WCSD annual audit. That was a “first” in charter school history in WCSD. CAS held its 5th Annual School Wide Science Fair with 160 Projects. CAS student won the 6th grade Washoe County Spelling Bee. CAS added a new portable computer lab with 24 wireless laptops for students. The Science Olympiads Team represented CAS at the Nevada Science Olympiads in Las Vegas. FIRST Lego League Robotics Team was the only Nevada team in the League at San Jose, CA. FIRST Robotics Team represented CAS in the Las Vegas Regional Competition and won the “best looking robot” award. CAS hosted the Readers Digest Word Power Challenge competition at the Boys and Girls club and one of our students placed 3rd.

Achievements in 2003-2004 School Year

Second place in the Nevada Science Olympiads state competition. High school robotics team participated in the Silicon Valley Regional Competition on April 1–3, 2004. Multiple Medals in 2004 Western Nevada Science and Engineering Fair. We are the only Nevada team participating in FIRST Lego League robotics competitions. Our team won the Sonora regional, and qualified for Northern California State Tournaments. Received special award in SimCity Future Cities Competition
