Woodward's rules

Woodward's rules, named after Robert Burns Woodward and also known as Woodward-Fieser rules (for Louis Fieser) are several sets of empirically derived rules which allow the absorption maximum of the ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy of a given compound to be calculated from the chromophores present, the substituents on the chromophores, and shifts due to the solvent. Examples are conjugated carbonyl compounds, [cite web | title = Woodward's Rules for Conjugated Carbonyl Compounds | url = http://www.chemistry.ccsu.edu/glagovich/teaching/316/uvvis/conjugated.html | author = Neil Glagovich | date = 2007-07-19 | publisher = Central Connecticut State University | accessdate = 2008-05-05] [cite web | url = http://www.cem.msu.edu/~reusch/VirtualText/Spectrpy/UV-Vis/uvspec.htm | title = UV-Visible Spectroscopy | author = William Reusch | work = VirtualText of Organic Chemistry | publisher = Michigan State University] conjugated dienes, [cite web | title = Woodward-Fieser Rules for Dienes | url = http://www.chemistry.ccsu.edu/glagovich/teaching/316/uvvis/diene.html | author = Neil Glagovich | date = 2007-07-19 | publisher = Central Connecticut State University | accessdate = 2008-05-05] and polyenes.
