The South African Open is one of the principal golf tournaments on the Sunshine Tour and since 1997 it has been co-sanctioned by the European Tour. It is one of the "National Opens" which receives special treatment from the Official World Golf Rankings, with the winner being guaranteed a minimum of 32 points regardless of the strength of the field. It has been known by several sponsored names and is currently called the "South African Airways Open". At present it takes place in December and falls into the following year's European Tour schedule, as the European Tour season opens in November.

Gary Player has been the most successful player in the tournament's history, with 13 victories over four decades between 1956 and 1981.
