Munnangi, also known as Muni-koti-puram, is a major village in Kollipara mandal in Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh, South India.

Geography

Munnangi lies on the east side of the river Krishna in Guntur District and about 14 miles (23 km) southwest from Vijayawada. It is on the historic southern route from Vijayawada to Repalle along with the River Krishna, and is bounded on its western side by the Tenali route that ran from Munnangi to Tenali via Duggirala, which is a major road connected to Munnangi Village.

History

The village has a population of over 7,000 (2001 census). It is located 25 miles (40 km) from Guntur city. Krishna River flows through Munnangi making it a part of the rice bowl of Andhra Pradesh. Munnangi is known for its rich cultural and literary legacy. There are many famous temples in Munnangi village like Shivalayam (almost 200 years old with five gods), Venugopala Swamy Temple, Sri Rama temples, Tirupattamma, Puttalamma and Vemana Matham. There are churches and mosques as well. This village has the strength to influence Duggirala Market Yard with its Turmeric production.

Location

Munnangi is situated 24 kilometres (15 mi) from Vijayawada, 18 kilometres (11 mi) from Tenali, and 28 kilometres (17 mi) from Guntur.

The village extends roughly 6 miles (9.7 km) north to south which includes about 20,000 acres (80.9 km2) of agriculture land; and roughly 2 miles (3.2 km) east to west from the Repalle River to Dantuluru Limits.

Historically, by the very early nineteenth century when a large group of devotees participated in Mass prayers near river Krishna, the name Munikotipuram (Muni Koti Puram) came into usage. After being called by the same name for almost 500 years, this village name was changed to Munnangi many years back.

There were no great changes in early nineteenth century. However finally in 1950s the Munnangi Village started developing and this brought many changes. The population at that time was relatively small. Several new housing assets have been built in the last 30 years in the village after the Independence Period. Further developments continue here.

The land in the village is still mainly agricultural but now comprises only few farms which employ very few people. The ZPPH School started in Munnangi in late 1970s’ and is now a well known school in the surrounding Villages; it educate a number of students who live in the village and the surrounding villages (Danthaluru and Pidaparru). ZPPH School has produced many students who are studying/working abroad (NRIs) and several engineers, doctors and professionals in other industries.

The total population is about 7500. The population divides by age group roughly into: 25% aged 18 and under, 50% aged between 18 and 60, 25% aged 60 or over.

The village has a primary school, many temples and a number of other businesses. Being on a radial route out of Tenali, the village has a regular bus service and is five miles from Duggirala, which is known for its Turmeric Market Yard.

Culture

Munnangi is famous for Chekka Bhajana, a traditional dance form with two wooden sticks. This used to be very famous in the 1960s to 1980s. Munnangi's villagers gave a Bhajana performance in ANR's movie, Puttaparthi Satya Sai Nilayam, and at the Rashtrapathi Bhavan when Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy was president.

Industries

  • Chicken farms: In the early 1980s, several people started chicken farms in Munnangi; the industry later expanded and helped many people financially.
  • Milk industry: Munnangi has supplied milk to Sangam Dairy for many years.
