middle school located inElgin, Illinois , a northwest suburb ofChicago, Illinois , in theUnited States . It is part ofCentral Community Unit School District 301 .The school was opened in 2007 to grades 6-8. Opening Prairie Knolls Middle School alleviated crowding at District 301's other middle school, Central Middle School, and saved the district roughly $186,900 in 2007 -- money it is not spending on the six mobile classrooms and their traffic barrier at Central Middle. Prairie Knolls is a much larger school compared to the smaller Central Middle School. It has two floors in comparison to 1 floor. STAR (Students That Accept Responsibility), is a program that focuses on the character traits of respect, responsibility, integrity, perseverance, fairness, acceptance, citizenship and compassion.STAR is student-led, with students planning and implementing activities and service projects throughout the year. The primary focus of this program is to develop in each student, the knowledge and desire to practice good character in all aspects of their lives. To accomplish this, each student must feel that his or her efforts have an impact on the school environment. Edward Hale states, “… it has to start with each of us. It is true I am only one, but I am one. And the fact that I cannot do everything will not prevent me from doing what I can do.”
