He was a Progressive Conservative member of theOntario legislature from1995 to1999 .Before entering politics, Pettit was the North American sales director of Valley City Manufacturing Co. He was elected to the provincial legislature in the 1995 provincial election, defeating future Liberal
cabinet minister Marie Bountrogianni by 1,028 votes. Incumbent New DemocratBrian Charlton finished third.Pettit was a backbench supporter of
Mike Harris 's government during his time in the legislature. He advocated the amalgamation of Hamilton with neighbouring municipalities, a policy initiative which was passed during the Harris government's second term.Pettit lost to Bountrigianni by about 2,500 votes in the 1999 provincial election. He has not campaigned for political office since this time.
