In late 2006, it was reported by numerous sources that
Rick Rubin worked with U2 on the follow-up to 2004'sHow To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb in the south of France and inAbbey Road Studios [cite web |url=http://www.vh1.com/news/articles/1541543/20060922/u2.jhtml |title=Green Day, U2 Take Historic Collaboration One Step Further By Re-Enacting Beatles' Abbey Road LP Cover |publisher=VH1.com |accessdate=2008-07-21] . These sessions produced two new songs, one being a cover of 1978'sThe Skids "The Saints Are Coming " withGreen Day andWindow In The Skies . Both have been played live since and were also released onU218 Singles .According to various sources, the majority of the Rubin sessions were later scrapped and
Brian Eno andDaniel Lanois were employed as principal producers andSteve Lillywhite mixed a few of the songs.cite web|url=http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qn4161/is_20080706/ai_n27903849|title=The best is yet to come|date=2008-07-06|publisher=Sunday Mirror|accessdate=2008-07-22] In a late 2006 on a radio interview withJo Whiley Bono said "We're gonna continue to be a band, but maybe the rock will have to go; maybe the rock has to get a lot harder. But whatever it is, it's not gonna stay where it is." [cite web |url=http://www.rte.ie/arts/2007/0102/u2.html |title=Bono planning to reinvent U2 sound |publisher=RTE.ie |accessdate=2007-12-16] In a December 2007 interview, Bono said the new album will include trance influences and a "dancefloor shock," saying that "There's some trance influences. But there's some very hardcore guitar coming out of The Edge. Real molten metal. It's not like anything we've ever done before, and we don't think it sounds like anything anyone else has done either." The Edge , he said the band were pursuing melodic songs. In December 2007, Bono then said the new album would include trance influences and "dance floor shock". ProducerDaniel Lanois was later quoted by Le Journal de Montreal onJune 28 , 2008 as saying that the new album will push the limits of the sound arena much like "Achtung Baby " did in 1991.Steve Lillywhite , who came into the studio recently to help the band put the final touches on the final album told Irish DJ Tony Fenton on July 6 2008 that it would be U2's best ever work. ProducerDaniel Lanois has said "I think we can safely say it's one of the great, innovative records from U2." [Daniel Lanois (2008), RTE Radio]The Sunday Mirror on July 29 reported the new album title as "No Line On The Horizon" for release on November 18. The Mirror, however, took most of that information from fansites such as Interference and atu2.com. A Whois search, however, revealed that Universal Music has registered the domain name "nolineonthehorizon.com", leading many to believe it could be the first song or the album, or possibly both.On August 18, a fan recorded four songs playing from Bono's beach house in Eze, France. These were subsequently uploaded to YouTube and Interference, but have been removed at the request of Universal Music from the former - the songs are still being shared through private messages and e-mails as well as other U2 fan-sites. More recently, Q Magazine revealed some more song titles which could possibly be finished versions or just working titles.cite web|url=http://www.atu2.com/news/article.src?ID=5081|title=In the Studio: U2|date=2008-08-01|publisher=Q Magazine|accessdate=2008-08-01]
