Kingdom of Scotland . Adam's name occurred for the first time in a Moray document datable between 1255 and 1271, where he was named as thePrecentor ofFortrose Cathedral . [Innes (ed.), "Registrum Episcopatus Moraviensis", p. 282; Watt, "Fasti Ecclesiae", p. 275.] He seems to have been introduced into thediocese of Ross , along with others from the north-east of England, by BishopRobert de Fyvie , who may have been descended from the area. [Watt, "Dictionary", p. 208.]After the death of Bishop Robert, sometime between
November 17 ,1292 , andNovember 18 ,1295 , two elections were conducted by thecathedral chapter of Ross: one elected Precentor Adam and the other electedThomas de Dundee .Watt, "Fasti Ecclesiae", p. 267.] Darlington travelled to thepapal curia , but on or before November 18, resigned his right to Dundee. He did however obtain a bishopric, becoming
Bishop of Caithness . OnApril 26 ,1296 , as Precentor of Ross he was provided to the Caithness diocese, vacant since the death ofAlan de St Edmund in 1291, and consecrated byHugh Aycelin ,Cardinal-Bishop of Ostia . [Dowden, "Bishops", p. 239; Watt, "Fasti Ecclesiae", p. 59.] He was not to be bishop long however, perhaps not even long enough to visit his new bishopric. He died atSiena some time beforeDecember 17 ,1296 , when Andrew,Abbot of Coupar Angus , was provided to the now vacant see of Caithness. [Dowden, "Bishops", p. 239; Watt, "Fasti Ecclesiae", pp. 59, 275.]Notes
