The U.S. state of
Missouri has 37National Historic Landmarks , recognized by the United States government for their historical significance. Landmarks are designated by theUnited States Secretary of the Interior because they are:
*Sites where events of national historical significance occurred;
*Places where prominent persons lived or worked;
*Icons of ideals that shaped the nation;
*Outstanding examples of design or construction;
*Places characterizing a way of life; or
*Archeological sites able to yield information.Current NHLs
These are distributed across 15 of Missouri's 114 counties and one independent city, with a concentration of 15 NHLs in the state's one independent city of St. Louis.
