subdivision = "1-2, see text""Hemiphaga" is the
genus containing two largespecies of pigeons fromNew Zealand . The two are traditionally consideredconspecific , but in 2001 it was proposed that "chathamensis" should be considered a separate species instead of asubspecies of "H. novaeseelandiae". [Millener, P. R., and R. G. Powlesland. (2001). The Chatham Island pigeon (Parea) deserves full species status; "Hemiphaga chathamensis" (Rothschild 1891); Aves: Columbidae. "Journal of the Royal Society of New Zealand" 31:365-383.] It is here listed as a species, although few authorities outside New Zealand have followed this. [Clements, J. (2007).
