Webjet Limited (ASX: [http://www.asx.com.au/asx/research/CompanyInfoSearchResults.jsp?searchBy=asxCode&allinfo=&asxCode=WEB WEB] ) operates one of Australia's most popular online travel booking websites ( [http://www.webjet.com.au/ webjet.com.au] ), on-selling air fares, hotel bookings, car hires and travel packages and has been listed on the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) since March 2000.

Company history

Established in 1998, Webjet is a licensed Travel Agent (no: 32282) and a member of the Travel Compensation Fund, operating and complying with the obligations set out in the Travel Agents Act 1986. Webjet was founded by former Jetset Travel Chief Executive David Clarke. Clarke had devised a low-cost distribution system to list up-to-date domestic airfares from different airlines. At the resurgence of the Internet in March 2000, he publicly listed the company on the ASX.

Since going public, Webjet has grown into one of Australia’s most popular online travel booking sites – earning a number one ranking for Australian Online Travel Agency Websites from internet ratings firm Hitwise for many periods, the most recent being the September 2007 award.

Webjet’s transaction values have increased year on year from 2003-04’s $20 million to 2006-07’s $250 million. Total Transaction Value (TTV) for FY 2006-2007 increased by 45% to AUD$250 million and the Company’s Net Profit After Tax (NPAT) rose by 67% to AUD$4 million. Technical innovations

In 2003, Webjet developed its own proprietary booking engine using Microsoft .NET technology. The platform called the Travel Services Aggregator integrates airline, hotel and car hire supplier systems allowing users to compare travel offers from a variety of sources at once.On 20 February 2007, Webjet launched the ‘Deal Finder’ for international flights. Pulling historical user data from Webjet’s database, the Deal Finder allows consumers to find better fares (as booked by other Webjet users) up to 14 days on either side of their preferred departure and arrival dates.
