University Hospital is a 612 bed tertiary care center located in downtown Augusta, Georgia directly across from the Medical College of Georgia. It was established in 1914, one of the oldest hospitals in Georgia.

History

The hospital was established in 1914, and its name came from the close proximity of the Medical College of Georgia as a replacement hospital and has a close affiliation with the college. It is the 3rd largest hospital in Georgia (behind Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta and Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon). Political upheavel caused the Medical College of Georgia to construct its own teaching facility, which opened as Talmadge Hospital in the 1950s. The Richmond County Hospital Authority moved to replace the aging University wings with a modern hospital, completed with conoary and intensive care units, which opened in 1970. In 1988, Chick-Fil-A opened its doors in the hospital. Today, the hospital has an important role in Augusta's economy, having an economic impact of $1 billion. The Outpatient Center opened in July of 2007 and the whole project cost at an estimated $93 million. The expansion project should be finished in the summer of 2009.
