The 2008 season decider on Sunday afternoon at Mona Park had an air of excitement about it, an expectation of a cracker match between the competition’s heavyweights, Camden Tigers and Balmain SC.
Just as the clock clicked over to reflect the 90th minute, and as everyone was preparing for extra time, Camden’s substitute, MacDonald, managed to get to a through ball before it crossed the goal-line, into the net to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
As soon as Mr Christie pointed to the spot, there was ever only going to be one outcome, and Buonavoglia picked himself up, dusted himself off, and sent Camden keeper Johnston the wrong way as he converted the penalty to send the grand final into extra time. 1 all.
Extra time had barely started and Camden had hit the front once again, Spain putting the Tigers 2-1 Up. A couple of minutes later and it all square again with, remarkably, the game’s fourth goal in almost as many minutes. Merlino beat a number of players to the loose ball to thump his shot into the unguarded net. 2 all.
Camden went first and scored 1-0 Camden Tigers. Buonavoglia scored with aplomb and making it 1 all. McDonald then left Fujiwara standing to score for Camden. 2-1 to Tigers. The MacKechnie brothers then scored both of their penalties for Camden, whilst Tucker and Pettenon did likewise for Balmain to cap off great personal performances. 4-3 to Tigers. Substitute McCormack then duly scored his penalty for Balmain to make it 4-4, and send the shootout into sudden death. Hardwick calmly converted his kick(5-4 to Balmain)Balmain SC are the 2008 Conference League Champions.
